Sinequan (doxepin) is a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) used to treat depression and/or anxiety. Less commonly patients buy Sinequan to treat insomnia, nerve pain, itchiness, or other ailments.

This product should not be used by patients under 12 years old or by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Patients can also buy Sinequan under the brand names Adapin, Curatin, and Doxepin. It is additionally sold as Silenor, though in low doses for treatment of insomnia.

Treatment Overview

Sinequan is predominantly used to treat depression or anxiety from any cause, including that associated with withdrawal from alcohol or recreational drugs. Both depression and anxiety are often present in the same person.

The medication is administered by tablet or, for those who have difficulty swallowing tablets, in a concentrated oral solution. Dosage is the same in either case. Food is not necessary; fluid is recommended. With regard to the oral solution, it is commonly mixed with water, juice, or any other non-carbonated beverage.

Treatment of depression or anxiety is very similar:

  • Start with 75 mg per day.
  • Dosage can be gradually increased up to 300 mg per day.
  • Doses up to 150 mg per day can be taken in a single dose before bed.
  • Doses greater than 150 mg should be divided into two daily doses.
  • The majority of patients find 75 to 150 mg per day to be optimal.

Some changes are noticeable within days of starting treatment, particularly anti-anxiety effects. It will take two to three weeks for full anti-depression effects to be felt; if results are not powerful enough after two or three weeks, dosage should be increased. Patients buy Sinequan to alleviate:

  • Fatigue
  • Apprehension
  • Worry
  • Guilt
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Tension

The medication is thought to work by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine, among other effects, though the exact mechanism by which this medication works is unclear.

Warnings before Use

Sinequan should not be used if an MAO inhibitor has been taken in the past 14 days. It should not be taken if allergic to similar medications, including amitriptyline, amoxapine, clomipramine, desipramine, imipramine, nortriptyline, protriptyline, or trimipramine.

This product can interact with other medications. Check with a doctor or pharmacist before mixing treatments.

As mentioned above, do not buy Sinequan for use in patients under 12 years of age.

Most side effects are mild and not cause for concern. Rarely more serious side effects develop, which warrant immediate medical attention:

  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Severe dizziness
  • Hallucinations
  • Confusion
  • Difficult or painful urination
  • Reduced urination
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements
  • Muscle weakness

The above symptoms will not be experienced by the majority of patients, and in the few that do experience them, effects are almost always reversible when treatment stops.
